Chief Raymond ‘Ray’ Gaines (Johnson) is a Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter-rescue pilot. In the midst of a divorce from his estranged wife, Emma (Gugino), he calls his daughter, Blake (Daddario), to talk about their upcoming trip to San Francisco. Meanwhile, Caltech seismologist Lawrence (Giamatti) and his Dr. Kim Park (Will Yun Lee) are at the Hoovermaking a breakthrough in when an unknownnearby ruptures, triggering a magnitude 7.1 earthquake which collapses the dam, killing Park in the process, but he gave his life when he saved a girl.
